Description
Vintage pottery duck by David Walters, Caversham Mill Pottery, hand made in South Africa. Porcelain molded/moulded and hand painted in multi colour matte enamel glazes, brown paper label makers mark, dating from 1979 to 1987. Excellent condition with no cracks or chips. Though not British made, there is a UK connection so I decided to list anyway.
Approx dimensions: 3" (7.6 cm) high x 5.5" (14 cm) long x 2.5" (6.3 cm) wide.
About David Walters.
David Walters was born in Durban in 1950.
‘Educated' at Hilton College and the Fine Arts Department of the University of Natal - (B.A.F.A. 1974) - and a short but memorable time with Tim Morris in 1969.
In 1979 he and his family moved from Pietermaritzburg to the Natal Midlands, to establish Caversham Mill Pottery and build a home there. Many exhibitions in the unique surroundings resulted in the formation of the Midlands Meander in the early 1980's. Sadly this all came to an end in 1987, when the Studio was entirely washed away by a flood. The family moved to Norfolk in England.
The Particular Pottery was set up in 1988 in an old Particular Baptist Chapel, in the village of Kenninghall. David became involved with the local Suffolk Craft Society, becoming Vice Chairman, and also Chairman of the Members Advisory Committee of the Craft Potters Association in London. He exhibited widely with the Suffolk Craft Society, the East Anglian Potters Association and the Norfolk Contemporary Craft Society.
Having returned home in 1998, the Studio and Gallery is now in a large restored Cape Dutch Victorian House in the middle of Franschhoek. David still favours wheel thrown reduction fired Porcelain as a medium, and is also working with ‘Smoke' or ‘Pit' fired burnished porcelain and glass.
